I must draw him away. No
matter what happens here, I am not the one who must survive this encounter.
tink ta tink

If only I can reach my
hammer. Moradin may hear and answer my prayer. There it is, I am almost there.

There is no pain that
can’t be endured as long as one holds true. Now is not the time to sleep. There
will be time for rest when they are safe.
FIGHT!!!
tink ta tink
tink ta tink
I cannot rest now. I
must keep him distracted. But I am so tired…
tink ta tink

Just as easily as
blowing out a candle the world fades. Yet in the darkness, I do not fear for the
sound of the forge still goes on and as long as I can hear the forge, I know
that I have done his will.
tink ta tink
tink ta tink
The sound of souls
finding their temper. The steady hammering of his hammer as it removes the
dross from our lives.
tink ta tink
Tink Ta Tink
I can hear it louder and
clearer now. The heat hot and searing but I do not fear it, I welcome the heat
as it drives away the injustices I have committed, my laziness, and cowardness.
Tink Ta Tink
Tink Ta Tink
The searing white light
begins to fade as I stand upon the anvil of Moradin. I stand there before the
All Hammer stoic as I await the final strike of the hammer to test my soul's
temper.

The hammer lands. Then
just as quickly there is a cold that washes over me. I feel everything contract
and set.
The quench.
The final test to see if
my metal is true and strong enough to stand for all time in the halls of Valhalla.
Will I be found worthy?
…
…
There is no more
hammering only silence now as I am inspected for the smallest of cracks.
…
…
Then the HE speaks, “Calo
Grizad though your life was cut short you have spent your days in my service
and have shown yourself worthy to enter Valhalla and rest in my labors.”
…
…
A path begins to form at
my feet. With joy and peace knowing that my life was not spent in vain. I
start along my new path to the halls of Valhalla. My pace in time with the
hammering of a new soul.

With each footfall, the
worries and memories of mortal cares are replaced with a greater divine purpose
and strength.

My foot lifts and
suddenly there are two paths. One continues onward, the other… The other almost
seems to return. But return where and to who or what?
tink ta tink
tink ta tink
I am hesitant. Why would
there be another path? Where does it lead? Why here? Why now?
Tink Ta Tink
Tink Ta Tink
There is an urgency in
the hammering now, as though I must choose. But how does one choose the known
versus the unknown?
TINK ta tink
TINK ta tink
I strain my eyes peering
to see what is further down the path. I see sorrow and pain. Worry and loss.
But who are they? A clan? My clan?
TINK TA tink
TINK TA tink
A tabaxi, a high elf, a
couple of half-elves, and a dwarf. This is unlike any clan I have seen and yet I
KNOW that they are my clan. Then I hear her voice as though spoken directly to
my soul “Calo, I hope you come back.”
TINK TA TINK
TINK TA TINK
I must choose. I must
choose NOW. My clan needs me and how can I not answer their plea. I know that
each of them has sacrificed of themselves to petition Moradin for my return. My
foot falls.
tink ta tink
tink ta tink
As the path slowly turns
back on itself, I look over to see HIM hammering steady as the mountains. He glances
at me and I catch a slight nod and smile as a jackapeasalope sits upon a shelf
behind him. I could have sworn that wasn’t there before.
